Few string ensembles are as adventurous as New York City’s ETHEL, which established itself in 1998 to blend conservatory musicianship with genre-crossing intensity. Their evening-long program Documerica is based on a photographic project funded by the EPA in the 1970s that documented America’s natural heritage through thousands of images. Revisiting the material in 2015, ETHEL commissioned new compositions to be combined with works from their repertoire, and performed together as a searing auditory accompaniment to an unforgettable visual document.
